Behind the Scenes with Kev: The Story of Monetta Collective

This week, I had the opportunity to share the heart behind Monetta Collective in an interview, diving into what drives my passion for vintage fashion and upcycling. It was an incredible moment to reflect on the journey so far, from growing up in Cleveland to creating a business that celebrates sustainability, individuality, and creativity.

You can find a video of the interview on our instagram @heymonetta. Thanks to Nacho Ann's Fabrics for reaching out!

The Midwest Roots of Creativity

During the interview, I spoke about growing up in a close-knit community just outside of Cleveland, OH. The Midwest instilled in me a sense of resourcefulness—finding beauty in the overlooked and making the most of what we have. This foundation sparked my love for vintage fashion, where every piece has a story waiting to be rediscovered.

The Move to Washington, DC

Relocating to DC three years ago was a transformative experience. The city’s fast pace and diversity challenged me to grow and brought me closer to a community that values sustainable living and self-expression. It was here that Monetta Collective truly came to life, blending my love for fashion and upcycling into a small business with purpose.

Why Upcycling Matters

One of the highlights of the interview was discussing what drew me to upcycling. For me, it’s the perfect mix of everything I care about—art, sustainability, and fashion. I shared how upcycling allows me to honor the history of a garment while giving it new life. It’s not just about reducing waste but also about creating pieces that stand out and connect with people on a deeper level.

The Journey So Far

From experimenting with designs in my small studio to launching Monetta Collective’s website and Etsy shop, every step has been a learning experience. The interview reminded me how far I’ve come since starting this venture. Every piece I curate or create represents hours of thought, care, and passion for reimagining what fashion can be.

Connecting Through Fashion

One of the most meaningful moments of the interview was reflecting on the power of clothing to connect people. I spoke about how fashion is more than just what we wear—it’s a way to express ourselves and engage with others. Each Monetta Collective piece is designed to do just that: spark connection and tell a story.

What’s Next for Monetta Collective?

The interview ended with a look at the future of Monetta Collective. My focus remains on expanding the shop while staying true to the values that inspired it. More upcycled designs, more curated vintage finds, and more opportunities to connect with customers who share a love for timeless, meaningful fashion.

Sharing my journey in this interview was a reminder of why I started Monetta Collective in the first place: to create something that matters, not just to me, but to the people who wear these pieces.

If you’ve ever wondered about the story behind the shop, this interview was a glimpse into the passion and purpose that drives everything I do. Thank you for being part of this journey—I can’t wait to share what’s next.
